Anxious For Nothing Finding Calm in a Chaotic World by Max Lucado is a wonderful, spiritual read that lays out a plan for turning anxiety into tranquility. It contains 152 pages full of wisdom, anecdotes, and Biblical insights that will leave you scratching your head wondering why you didn’t think of it yourself.
Based on the scriptures, Philipians 4:4-8, Lucado breaks down each phrase into digestible and relevant tidbits on how to recognize anxiety for what it is and choose to refocus that energy.
This inspirational text suggests that we toss worry aside and look on the bright side of life through the lens of gratitude. Having a grateful heart changes our perspective on our circumstances.
Several quotes stood out to me:
“Others see the problems of the world and wring their hands. We see the problems of the world and bend our knees.” (p31)
“There is a reason the windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror. Your future matters more than your past.” (p47)
“Worry refuses to share the heart with gratitude. One heartfelt thank-you will suck the oxygen out of worry’s world.” (p96)
“No problem is unsolvable. No life is irredeemable. No one’s fate is sealed. No one is unloved or unlovable.” (p123)
“Life gives lemons to good people, bad people, old people, all people. Life comes with lemons. But we don’t have to suck on them.” (p151)
I highly recommend this book. It was a daily dose of encouragement for me; infusing C.A.L.M. into my day. I plan to keep it on my desk as a reminder when I’m feeling anxious to put into practice his suggestions until they become habitual.
